First you had J-pop from Japan, then came K-pop from Korea ... and now you're going to see the start of a new trend called T-pop from Thailand!
Chinawut ‘Chin’ Indracusin dons his ‘khon’ costume and headdress.
Thailand's dancing/singing pop-star Chinawut ``Chin'' Indracusin of Duckstar label under the GMM Grammy umbrella has been selected to represent Thailand at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 at the Thailand national day event in September.
However, Chin's manager was stumped when it came to the kind of performance for Chin. In Thailand, his looks and hip hop dance moves make him a huge hit among young people, but he is hardly an international star ... yet.
Foreigners do know Thailand's khon masked dance, however, and that would go down better as a Thai cultural performance.
With no Thai classical dance background to speak of, Chin was sent packing to Patravadi Theatre for a one-month khon 101 intensive course with Manop Meejamras in preparation for his show.
``It was really tough, since I had to start from zero,'' said Chin. ``I've had my fingers bent backwards, had to learn arm positions, leg positions and basic walking-on-the-spot movements. It was really tiring and my body ached like mad. But I can't give up; I have to do my best and make Thailand proud.''
Without proper training, there is only so much he can pick up in one month, so he will be adapting khon movements and combining them with his own dance steps to create a contemporary style that is totally Chin.
So forget the J-pop and K-pop. Watch out for T-pop by Chin at the Shanghai World Expo.
